Cosmeceutical Role of Medicinal Plants and Herbs: Therapeutic and Cosmetic Perspectives

Abstract:

Cosmeceuticals represent a convergence of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, incorporating bioactive compounds from medicinal plants that offer both therapeutic and aesthetic benefits. This review explores the multifaceted roles of plant-derived ingredients in skincare, examining their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-aging, and skin-regenerative properties. Important phytochemicals including polyphenols, terpenoids, alkaloids, and vitamins demonstrate efficacy in addressing photoaging, hyperpigmentation, acne, and dermatological disorders through diverse molecular mechanisms. Notable botanical sources such as green tea, turmeric, aloe vera, and ginseng provide evidence-based alternatives to synthetic ingredients. Despite promising therapeutic potential, challenges persist regarding standardization, bioavailability, clinical validation, and regulatory frameworks. Advanced extraction technologies and novel delivery systems continue to enhance phytocosmeceutical efficacy. This comprehensive analysis bridges traditional botanical knowledge with contemporary scientific evidence, elucidating the future trajectory of plant-based cosmeceutical development and evidence-based skincare innovation.
